A FEATURED BLOG widget that would show a snapshot of the blog in question and pulling in their description.
It would need to be admin enabled and administered as we all know that the community will become full of blogs that arent used. We dont want empty blogs featured, but it would be a great tool….

Thats a great idea, there are already plenty of widgets available for WPMU, I am sure we would simply need to port the code to a bp-component. Not sure of exact details of how to do so…. :-\

Nor me but the idea is there .. What I am doing also now is using the normal blogroll to make a list of the blogs as they are created….manually. But people were having trouble getting to blkogs they were just authors on. There were no links etc. So now all they have to do is, go to the front page and they are now linked.
I will make a manual featured blog for now and see what the members think of it.

Make a widget that takes the blog ID (or better yet, blog IDs – comma separated) and then use the BP blog retrieving functions to grab the blog info for the featured blogs that you want to display. You can also grab the latest post title and excerpt if you wish, just look at the way the current front page widgets do it.
On the flokka site, I’ve built in a featured blogs setting in my custom theme settings page so the admin can easily set the desired featured blogs.
